
Laptop marketing is built around numbers that are easy to print and hard to interpret. More cores, more gigahertz, more nits, a higher refresh rate. Almost none of it tells you whether a particular machine will be good for what you do.
This guide works in the other direction. Start from your actual usage, identify the two or three things that genuinely constrain your choice, and treat everything else as a tiebreaker.
Step one: be honest about your workload
Most people fall into one of four profiles, and the profile determines nearly everything.
Light and portable. Web, email, documents, video calls, streaming, light photo editing. This describes the majority of laptop users, including a great many people who believe they need more. Modern entry-level hardware handles this comfortably, and the money is better spent on screen quality, keyboard, and build than on processing power you will never engage.
Sustained professional work. Large spreadsheets, dozens of browser tabs alongside heavy applications, software development, design work, regular video calls while running other tools. Here memory and sustained thermal performance matter far more than peak benchmark scores.
Creative and compute-heavy. Video editing, 3D work, large-scale data analysis, machine learning experimentation. This profile genuinely needs a discrete GPU or a high-end integrated chip, substantial memory, and fast local storage — and should expect to trade weight and battery life for it.
Gaming. A distinct category with its own logic: discrete GPU, high-refresh display, and a cooling system with room to breathe. Gaming laptops are heavy, loud under load, and poor at battery life, and no amount of marketing changes that physics.
Choose honestly. The single most common purchasing error is buying for an aspirational workload — the video editing you intend to start, the game you might install — and then carrying an extra kilogram around for four years.
The three specifications that actually constrain you
Memory
If you only optimise one thing, optimise this. Memory is the most common real bottleneck in everyday use, and it is increasingly soldered to the motherboard and therefore impossible to upgrade later.
For light use, 16GB is now the sensible floor. Machines with 8GB still exist at the budget end and will feel constrained within their lifespan as operating systems and browsers grow. For professional multitasking, 16GB is workable and 32GB is comfortable. For creative and compute-heavy work, 32GB is the floor and 64GB is worth considering.
Check whether memory is upgradeable before purchase. On most thin-and-light machines it is not, which turns a £150 configuration choice into a permanent limit.
Storage
512GB is the practical minimum for a primary machine. 256GB fills faster than people expect once the operating system, applications, and a few years of accumulated files are accounted for, and a nearly full drive degrades in performance.
Confirm it is an SSD — on any current machine it will be, but the distinction still appears in the budget end of the refurbished market. Where a spec sheet distinguishes between NVMe and SATA, NVMe is meaningfully faster, though the difference is far less noticeable than the jump from a hard drive to any SSD.
External storage is cheap and easy, so storage is the one specification where under-buying is recoverable.
The screen
You look at this constantly, and it affects your experience more than a processor generation ever will.
Resolution should be at least 1920×1080 at 13 to 14 inches, and higher above that size. Brightness matters more than most people realise — 300 nits is adequate indoors, 400 or more is needed for a bright room or outdoor use, and anything below 250 will be frustrating near a window.
Matte versus glossy is a genuine trade-off rather than a quality difference. Glossy panels look richer; matte panels are far easier to use under overhead lighting. Choose based on where you work.
High refresh rates above 60Hz make scrolling feel smoother and are genuinely pleasant, but they cost battery life and are a luxury rather than a requirement outside gaming.
What matters less than the marketing suggests
Processor model number. Beyond matching the right tier to your profile, the differences between adjacent chip generations are small in real use. A two-year-old high-tier processor will outperform a current low-tier one, which makes last year’s premium model frequently the best value on the market.
Peak benchmark figures. Thin laptops throttle. A machine that posts an impressive score in a thirty-second test may settle at a fraction of that after ten minutes of sustained load, because there is nowhere for the heat to go. If you do long-running work, look for reviews that test sustained performance rather than burst.
Weight differences under 200 grams. You will not notice. Differences of half a kilogram or more, you will notice every day.
The things reviews mention and buyers forget
Keyboard and trackpad. If you type for a living, this is arguably the most important component in the machine and it cannot be upgraded. Key travel, layout quirks, and a full-size arrow cluster are worth checking in person if you possibly can.
Ports. A laptop with two USB-C ports and nothing else means a dongle in your bag permanently. Consider what you plug in regularly — external displays, card readers, wired headphones, older peripherals — and count accordingly. Check whether charging occupies one of the data ports.
Repairability. Can the battery be replaced? Is the storage upgradeable? Are spare parts sold? A machine with a replaceable battery has a realistically longer usable life, and this information is available from independent teardown assessments rather than from manufacturers.
Software the manufacturer adds. Some Windows machines arrive with a substantial amount of pre-installed software, trial antivirus, and manufacturer utilities that consume resources and are tedious to remove. Reviews usually mention it.
Budget bands and what changes
Under roughly £500, expect adequate performance for light use, a dim screen, a plastic chassis, and probably 8GB of memory. Refurbished business machines from the previous two or three generations are usually a much better buy at this price than new consumer models — better keyboards, better build, better screens.
Between £500 and £900 is where most people should be looking. Solid performance for light and moderate professional use, decent screens, reasonable build quality, and adequate memory if you choose carefully.
Between £900 and £1,500 buys genuine quality: excellent screens, all-day battery, strong sustained performance, and build that survives being carried daily. Most premium thin-and-light machines sit here.
Above £1,500 you are buying either specialist capability — discrete GPUs, high-end creative performance — or brand and design. The performance-per-pound curve flattens sharply.
The refurbished case
Ex-business laptops deserve more attention than they get. Corporate machines are built to a higher standard than consumer equivalents, come off lease in large volumes after three years, and sell for a fraction of their original price with a warranty from a reputable refurbisher.
A three-year-old business ultrabook at £400 will typically have a better keyboard, a better screen, better build quality and more ports than a new £500 consumer model. The trade-offs are battery health and a shorter remaining lifespan, so buy from a seller who states battery condition and offers at least a twelve-month warranty.
A short decision procedure
Identify your profile honestly. Set memory according to it and treat that number as non-negotiable. Set a storage floor of 512GB. Filter for screens above 300 nits at 1080p or better. Then, among whatever remains within budget, choose on keyboard, ports, weight, and battery life — the things you will interact with every single day.
The processor, which is what the advertising is about, should be roughly the last thing you think about.
