
The average smartphone lifespan is three to four years. By that point the battery is degraded, new versions have added features, and “your phone is getting old” becomes an acceptable excuse to upgrade. These timelines are not laws of physics. They are design choices.
A smartphone with discipline can easily reach five years of reliable use. The cost savings and environmental impact are significant.
What actually wears out
Battery. Lithium-ion batteries degrade with charge cycles. A phone used heavily might go through 500-1,000 charge cycles in a year. After 500-1,000 cycles, the battery holds 70-80% of its original capacity. By three years, capacity has often dropped to 60-70%. At that point the phone feels slow to charge and drains quickly.
Screen. A glass screen can crack or get damaged if the phone is dropped. OLED screens can develop burn-in with age. Most people see no degradation if the phone is protected.
Processor. A processor does not degrade, but it does become slower relative to new processors running new software.
Storage. Flash storage degrades slowly with writes, but in normal use you will not see degradation in five years.
Speaker and microphone. Can fail but usually don’t unless water damaged.
Battery is the limiting factor. Everything else usually still works.
Making it to five years
Preserve the battery. Keep charge between 20% and 80% if you can. Let the phone drain fully to zero occasionally but not constantly. Avoid fast charging if possible; it generates heat that degrades the battery. If you do use fast charging, don’t let the phone heat up. Put it in a cool place immediately after charging.
Use a case and screen protector. Drops damage screens and sometimes the frame. A good case and protector prevents this. Do not cheap out on cases; they fail when you need them most.
Keep software updated. New iOS and Android versions often include optimizations for older hardware. Update to the latest version supported on your phone.
Replace the battery at the two-year mark. Before it visibly degrades. A battery replacement costs £50-100 and makes the phone feel new again. Do not wait until the battery barely holds charge.
Use low-power mode regularly. This extends battery life and reduces wear.
Avoid extreme heat. Do not leave the phone in direct sun or in a car in summer. Heat kills batteries.
Avoid extreme cold. Very cold temperatures reduce battery efficiency temporarily but don’t cause permanent damage.
The financial math
A phone costs £400-1,200. If you replace it every three years, that is £130-400 per year. If you keep it for five years, that is £80-240 per year.
A battery replacement at two years costs £50-100. A screen replacement if dropped costs £150-300. Even with one battery and one screen replacement, you are at £280-500 total for five years of use — less than half the cost of a replacement phone.
If you keep the phone in good condition and never damage it, you are probably at £150-200 total for five years.
The software support limitation
New versions of iOS and Android often drop support for older phones. iPhone 6S got iOS 15 but not iOS 16. Some Android phones only get three years of major updates.
This is the actual limiting factor for five-year phones. Once you stop receiving security updates, the phone becomes a liability.
Check your phone’s support status. If it is at the end of its support window, replacing it is reasonable.
What gets harder as phones age
Apps become incompatible. New versions of apps sometimes require a newer OS. If your phone is stuck on an older OS, eventually you cannot update popular apps.
Camera and video performance. The processor is the limiting factor. A five-year-old phone’s camera is much slower at processing. Photos take longer, video has more compression artifacts.
Gaming. New games often require a more modern GPU. Older games still work.
Performance. Older processors are slower. By five years, the phone feels slower than new phones. If you are expecting snappy performance, you will be disappointed.
Which phones last longest
iPhone. Apple provides six to seven years of OS updates for most phones. Battery replacement is common and straightforward. Parts are available. A five-year-old iPhone is usually still receiving security updates.
Samsung. More recent Samsung flagships now get five years of OS updates, which is new. Older models got three years. Battery and screen replacement is possible but more involved than iPhone.
Pixel. Google’s updates are fast and reliable. Support is usually three to four years of major updates, with longer security-update periods. Battery replacement is easy.
OnePlus, Motorola, others. Support tends to be shorter. If you want a five-year phone, the mainstream brands are more reliable.
For maximum longevity, iPhone is the default choice. For Android, Pixel or recent Samsung flagships are next best.
The environmental argument
A phone kept for five years instead of three produces significantly less electronic waste and requires less mining of rare earth metals. If half the population kept phones for five years instead of three, the environmental impact of smartphone manufacturing would drop by roughly 40%.
This is sometimes used as a marketing argument (“keep your phone longer for the environment”), but it is true. The greenest phone is the one you already own.
The lifestyle trade-off
A five-year-old phone is noticeably slower than the current generation. If you value performance and new features, this is a real cost. If you are happy with a camera that is “good enough” and performance that is “good enough,” the cost is minimal.
Most people would be happier with a three-year-old phone than they expect. Camera quality has plateaued — the iPhone 11 camera is not noticeably worse than the iPhone 15 for most uses. Processing power exceeded what most apps need. Screen quality plateaued five years ago.
The main reason to upgrade is not capability. It is the psychological feeling of having something new.
If you can get past that, five years is absolutely achievable.
