
A frustrating home network is treated as inevitable. The WiFi drops, certain rooms have no signal, guests cannot connect, speeds are slow. Everyone expects this as the cost of WiFi.
These problems are usually caused by bad choices made once. Once you fix them, the network usually just works.
The three-layer model
A reliable home network has three layers.
The backbone. One good router in a central location. It should be modern (WiFi 6 or better), have good coverage, and be positioned in the middle of your home vertically (not in a closet, not hidden behind furniture).
Secondary coverage. If your home is large, one router is not enough. Add mesh nodes or access points to extend coverage. These should be hardwired to the main router via ethernet (backhaul). WiFi backhaul is better than nothing but degrades performance.
Wired connections. Anything that can be wired should be. Desktop computer, smart TV, game console, home server. WiFi is for devices that move. Everything else should be wired to the router or a switch.
This model costs £200-400 for a decent implementation. A broken network costs in frustration and unproductive hours.
The common mistakes
Putting the router in a closet. Poor placement is the number-one cause of dead zones. The router is the transmitter. Put it in a central location, elevated, not blocked by metal or water (aquariums, refrigerators).
Relying on WiFi backhaul. If you need to extend coverage, hardwire the nodes with ethernet. Run ethernet through walls, under carpet, through conduits, wherever. The installation is a one-time hassle. The performance gain is permanent.
Using the router’s default settings. Many routers auto-select WiFi channels, but they do this badly — picking the same channel as all your neighbours. Log in, check what channels are congested, and set a clear channel manually.
Too many devices on 2.4GHz. The 2.4GHz band is crowded (WiFi, Bluetooth, microwave ovens all use it) and has fewer channels. Put older devices there if you must, but modern devices should use 5GHz or 6GHz where there is more spectrum.
Ignoring the WiFi 6 upgrade. If your router is more than five years old and you have devices that support WiFi 6, upgrading the router is usually worth it. WiFi 6 is much more efficient on congested networks and gives a real speed boost in real conditions, not just on benchmarks.
Diagnosing a problem
Before replacing things, diagnose.
Run a speed test. Does your connection speed match what you pay for? If you get 10 Mbps but pay for 100 Mbps, the problem is with your ISP, not your network. If speeds are lower in some rooms, you have a coverage problem.
Check signal strength. On your phone or computer, check the WiFi signal strength in different rooms. Anything below -70 dBm is marginal. Below -80 dBm is poor. If certain rooms are weak, that explains the problem.
Check connected devices. Log into your router and see what is connected. If 47 devices are connected (many of which you forgot about), that can degrade performance.
Test with wired connection. If you connect a device with ethernet and the problem goes away, the problem is WiFi, not the internet. If the problem persists, the issue is with the internet connection itself.
Check for interference. Move the router away from other electronics. Microwave ovens, cordless phones, and baby monitors use the same 2.4GHz frequency and can cause interference.
Fixing the common problems
Dead zones: Add mesh nodes or access points, hardwired via ethernet.
Slow speeds: Change WiFi channels to less congested ones, move the router away from interference sources, upgrade to a newer router.
Devices dropping off: Update the router firmware, reduce the number of connected devices, check if the router is overheating (make sure it has ventilation).
Some devices not connecting: Check if they support the WiFi standard the router is broadcasting. A very old device might only support 802.11n and not connect to a WiFi 6 network. Force the router to broadcast an older standard as a fallback.
Guests cannot connect: Make sure guest network is enabled if the router has one. Check that the password is correct.
The equipment that works
Routers. Anything mainstream from TP-Link, Netgear, ASUS, or Ubiquiti will work. Avoid budget options with one antenna. Avoid ISP-provided routers if you can — they are usually poor value.
Mesh systems. Ubiquiti UniFi is overkill unless you need professional management. Netgear Orbi and ASUS ZenWiFi are solid consumer options. Google Nest WiFi and Amazon Eero are fine if you want simplicity.
Ethernet. Cat6A is overkill for home use. Cat6 is fine. Cat5e works for most purposes. Do not use cat3 telephone cable.
Switches. If you need to hardwire multiple devices, use a gigabit switch. £20-50 for an 8-port switch.
The configuration you should care about
- WiFi 6 (if available)
- Separate SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz (so devices choose optimally)
- A strong WiFi password
- WPA3 encryption (or WPA2 if older devices don’t support WPA3)
- Guest network enabled if you have visitors
- Updated firmware
- Hardwired backhaul for mesh nodes
- Router placed centrally and not blocked
Everything else is fine at defaults.
Testing the result
A working network does this:
- Connects immediately when you move between rooms
- Gets full signal strength in rooms with the router and decent signal (above -70dBm) elsewhere
- Maintains connection even if you move to a room far from the router
- Provides the speeds you pay for when hardwired
- Provides 50-80% of your paid speed over WiFi in rooms with good signal
- Does not drop devices
- Reconnects automatically if something interrupts the connection
If your network does these things, you are done. If not, identify which test it fails and address that.
The honest assessment
Networking is not glamorous, which means it is often neglected. A good network is invisible — you never notice it. A bad network is omnipresent frustration.
Fixing a broken network is not difficult. It is usually a combination of better placement, fewer shared channels, and hardwiring the backbone. The cost is low, the payoff is enormous, and the work is a one-time investment.
Stop accepting a bad network. It takes an afternoon to fix and a few hundred pounds in equipment.
